Feeding a large family on the road

OK, we have had some pretty long stretches in the car so far and although I don’t claim to be an expert, I have found some good ways to keep the troops fed.

Feeding everyone is essential and it is the key to keeping children happy. My lot always get grumpier and bicker when they are hungry. But as anyone knows who has ever travelled, food purchased on the road has as much goodness in it as cardboard. So one thing that had helped is to buy healthy snacks in bulk for each trip. It keeps them fed but also staves the boredom!

When they snack, they even get quieter, which is worth any effort after 7 hours in a car.

So we buy nuts, dried fruit, seeds, cheese, fruit and then make up snack cups on the move. That way they can have a top up if they want but also small quantities means less mess if they drop it.img_20161021_103012

We do get through quite a few bags but its great to know they are getting a range of nutrients. I also have a big bowl of fruit washed and ready to eat so they can graze until they are full. We are probably eating a lot more bread thgthgan we woukd at gome but it helps to full us up until we can arrive somewhere and cook a meal

We have found that France has some great rest areas and service stations too so we can stop for sandwiches or prepared salads. And of course the odd croissant or creme patisserie! (we arent perfect!) The French have put a lot of thought and care into travellers and keeping people happy and refreshed on the road. Its a shame the tolls dont have such a joyful affect!img_20161021_103110
